Historic Cemetery Tour - in Italy!
Join me to explore Italy's amazing historic cemeteries, full of impressive artwork. Learn cemetery symbolism, art history, and culture. (And be spoiled by a private chef!)
Historic Cemetery Tour:
Guess what? I’ve been invited to work as a symbolism guide in Italy for another historic cemetery tour. (Last year’s tour was a blast.)
Want to join me? :)
It’s gonna be so FUN!
Halloween - Italian style
The 2025 Tour: This year’s 10-day tour is based in Rome and kicks off October 31st. This means we will experience Halloween, All Saints’ Day, and All Souls’ Day—Italian style!
Tour organizer: Organized by art tour guide extraordinaire Lisa Statkus of Lisa’s Gryphon’s Art and Travel, this journey is meticulously curated to offer an authentic Italian experience. Lisa personally selects each location and venue to immerse her tour groups in the culture, food, and beauty of Italy.
For Historic Cemetery Fans
Who is this tour for? THIS particular workshop is for anyone interested in historic cemeteries and the magnificent works of art to be found there.
Artists are welcome, of course, and there will be time to draw and sketch if you want. None of last year’s attendees were artists, but we took a LOT of photos.
Home away from Home… near Rome!
Where will we stay? Our 10-day holiday begins with a hotel stay in Rome, then moves to our home away from home—a lovingly maintained 16th-century Italian agriturismo called La Montalla. (An agriturismo is a farm that offers accommodations.)
Not only is La Montalla historic, but it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
Private Chef:
And, let’s talk about the amazing food: During our stay at La Montalla our private chef, Eufemia, will spoil us all with expertly prepared regional cuisine and local wine.
Day trips:
From the agriturismo, we’ll take day trips to explore historic burial grounds and uncover the rich stories of Italy’s past. We will also have the chance to enjoy some restaurants and cafes.
What will we do?
What to expect? Throughout our 10-day tour, I’ll provide historic context and insights into the symbolism and artwork we encounter while exploring Italian graveyards, Etruscan tombs, ancient catacombs, monumental cemeteries, and charming villages.
Learn, See, Do:
During the workshop, you’ll dive into cemetery symbolism, funeral traditions, and cultural history—all while indulging in delicious Italian cuisine, making friends, and maybe even picking up a few Italian phrases.
The 2024 Workshop
Last year’s tour: Last year’s tour was a blast. Over 10 days, we:
Explored Italy’s monumental cemeteries
Wandered medieval walled cities
Learned about cemetery symbols
Photographed stunning sculptures
Experienced Italian culture
Ate tasty regional foods (and wine!)
Made friends
And had a memorable (and deeply enriching) experience.
You can see a photo essay about the Fall 2024 trip here.
Dream Trip for Cemetery Art & History Lovers
In short: this is a dream trip for cemetery art and history lovers!
I’m so excited about this year’s workshop! Not only is Lisa Statkus a gracious host, but it’s a wonderful opportunity to learn, see amazing sights, eat amazing food, make friends, and have fun — everything I love about travel.
